Under the commonly used term R&D work, there are industrial research and development work. R&D activity by definition "includes creative work undertaken systematically to increase knowledge resources, including knowledge about humans, culture and society, and the use of these knowledge resources to create new applications." Research and development activity of enterprises may include both industrial research and development work or development work. R&D activity will not include industrial research alone.
Industrial research is, simply put, work leading to the development of new knowledge and skills for the development of new or significantly improved products, technologies or services.
Development work is nothing more than the use and application of available knowledge to create a prototype of a new innovative solution. R&D activities typically use new knowledge developed in industrial research.
A common situation is the trivialization of R&D work. Industrial research must be characterized by documented tests of features and functionality of a new product, service or technology. They are aimed at obtaining knowledge whether we will achieve the planned assumptions, e.g. regarding product functionality.
R&D work results from a simple assumption: if something is not on the market, it is not known how to make it. Industrial research serves to use available knowledge to obtain a plan or prototype of a new solution. Development work, on the other hand, uses the results of industrial research, shaping the developed solution, creating a prototype and testing it in conditions close to real. As part of development work, the results of research work are combined with technical knowledge in order to introduce a new or significantly improved product, technology or service into production.
The implementation of R&D work must be characterized by technological readiness, which means that we must start and finish work at a specific level. The documentation of competitions involving the conduct of R&D work requires starting industrial research at the level of II technological readiness:
the concept of technology or its future application has been defined. This means the beginning of the process of searching for potential application of technology. From the moment of observing the basic principles describing a new technology, its practical application can be postulated, which is based on predictions. There is no proof or detailed analysis yet confirming the adopted assumptions.
However, we should finish development work at level IX:
testing technology in real conditions has achieved the intended effect. This indicates that the demonstrated technology is already in its final form and can be implemented in the target system. Among other things, this concerns the use of developed systems in real conditions.
To summarize, research and development work is nothing more than the development of new knowledge, and then its use to create an innovative solution, which we can then introduce to business activities by implementing the results of research and development work by purchasing necessary equipment, machines, real estate or conducting construction work. Where the R&D project ends, investment begins.
